The next time you have pizza...

The next time you have pizza...

Purpose: This activity is a fun way to teach your child about fractions, sharing, and social-emotional learning (SEL) in a relaxed, real-world setting. Using pizza as a teaching tool gives you the chance to turn an everyday moment into a meaningful learning experience. It helps children understand that learning doesn’t always have to happen at a desk or with worksheets—it can happen naturally through everyday activities like sharing a meal. This activity also encourages conversations around fairness and responsibility, reinforcing important SEL skills like empathy, taking turns, and understanding how to make decisions that consider the needs of others.

Materials Required:

  • Pizza (or any food with slices)

Instructions:

1. Get Started: When the pizza arrives, pause before eating

2. Talk Fractions: Count the slices together. Ask, “How many slices do we have?” Then, talk about fractions. For example, “If I take two slices, what fraction is that?” or “If we share it with three people, how many slices does each person get?”

3. Watch and Learn: Watch this fun video together about fractions and sharing. It will make the concept even clearer and a lot more fun!

4. Share and Discuss: Use the pizza as a chance to talk about sharing. Ask, “How can we make sure everyone gets a fair share?” or “If someone wants more, how can we share better?”

5. Make It Fun: Turn it into a game by asking your child to pick a slice and explain why they chose it. Or, have them save one slice to “share” with someone else later.

6. Enjoy and Reflect: While eating, casually talk more about fractions and sharing. You’ll be sneaking in learning while enjoying the meal!
