The third and final unit of our First Grade interdisciplinary unit-style learning curriculum is, ‘Nature’s Symphony’. It is an enriching exploration of the natural world that allows young learners to journey through diverse habitats across the globe. It’s designed to eliminate boundaries between subjects, guiding children in integrating knowledge from various areas.

Unit 3 of our First Grade set is divided into three sections:

  1. Habitats and Adaptation - In this section, children explore various habitats around the globe, from deserts and rainforests to oceans and mountains. They will learn about the incredible adaptations of plants and animals, understanding how these adaptations help them survive in their environments. By studying human habitats and the lifestyles of different indigenous peoples, such as the Tuareg, Yanomami, Inuit, and Sherpa, children gain a global perspective on adaptation and survival. This section culminates with lessons on human impact, restoration, and conservation, empowering children to become advocates for the natural world.

  2. Weather and Seasons - Children will delve into the world of weather, learning about temperatures, precipitation, wind, and weather patterns. They will explore the changing seasons and how they affect animals, plants, and humans. Through activities such as weather forecasting and graphing weather data, children develop an understanding of meteorology. This section also emphasizes the emotional and cultural significance of seasons, culminating in a reflective project on the global impact of weather and our responsibilities.

  3. Outdoor Exploration and Conservation - This section encourages hands-on learning through outdoor exploration. Children will identify and count local flora and fauna, create art inspired by nature, and listen to nature’s storytellers. They will learn about the human impact on nature, pollution, and conservation efforts. By studying global conservation practices and comparing data, children are inspired to make a difference in their own communities. This section concludes with a conservation pledge, where children express their commitment to protecting the environment through poetry and art.

We spent our way back home spotting red cars, and guessing three words that rhymed with ‘stop’, reminded my daughter of the sweet shop and you can guess what happened next!
