The Unit 3 of our interdisciplinary unit-style learning Second grade curriculum, ‘Patterns in Our World’ takes children on a bold journey of exploration, innovation, and impact. ‘Little Explorers, Big Changemakers’ encourages learners to uncover natural wonders, ancient civilizations, and modern movements that have shaped - and continue to shape - our world.

This final Unit (3) of our Second Grade set is divided into three sections:

  1. Frontiers of Space - Young learners begin with the stars, traveling through the solar system and beyond. They study planets, constellations, and mythology while learning how ancient civilizations used the night sky for timekeeping, agriculture, and storytelling. With lessons like “Dreaming Big, Starting Small” and “Mae Jemison’s Legacy,” students connect scientific discovery to personal inspiration, exploring how the sky has always sparked human imagination and innovation.

  2. Earth's Marvels - Learners then turn their gaze to the wonders of our own planet, exploring landforms, weather systems, and natural disasters through poetry, data collection, and engineering challenges. From the rhythm of rivers to the force of hurricanes, children learn not only how Earth works, but how to stay safe, prepare for emergencies, and respect the planet’s power. This section bridges scientific understanding with personal responsibility.

  3. Helping Our World and Our Community - The final section brings it all home. Learners explore changemakers throughout history and reflect on their own power to make a difference. With lessons on fairness, empathy, sustainability, and civic responsibility, learners develop social awareness and emotional intelligence. Through hands-on action projects, poetry, and storytelling, they learn that every person - no matter how small - can create a ripple of positive change.

One of the highlights of Unit 3 is its integration of storytelling, science, social action, and sustainability. From ancient stars to modern heroes, this unit helps children connect the past, present, and future - and see themselves as part of a larger human journey.

This unit-style curriculum is ideal for busy parents to be utilized as a supplement with as little as 10–15 minutes of quality time per day. It is also suitable as a standalone for my fellow homeschooling parents who are in search of an interdisciplinary curriculum to add to their shelf.

Includes a comprehensive range of high-quality, concept-building activities for 7–8 year-olds. With weekly unit-based lessons, resources, and quick check-for-understanding assessments, fun, learning and growth are seamlessly ensured. Packed with built-in discussion points, creative challenges, real-world application, and space for reflection, this Unit 3/3 of the Second Grade set empowers students to learn with both their hearts and minds.
