The Unit 2 of our interdisciplinary unit-style learning Second grade curriculum, ‘Patterns in Our World’ invites learners to explore the powerful concept of patterns – how they shape nature, numbers, history, and human behavior. This unit encourages students to look closely, think critically, and discover the order and beauty woven into the world around them.

This Unit 2 of our Second Grade set is divided into three sections:

1. Cycles and Systems – Learners begin by observing natural cycles – day and night, moon phases, seasons, and the water cycle. They then explore how human systems such as transportation and communication have developed over time. From shadow tracking to exploring the digital age, this section builds scientific knowledge while connecting past innovations to modern life.
2. Mathematical Mysteries – This section brings math alive through art, architecture, nature, and everyday problem-solving. Learners investigate symmetry, patterns in nature, financial literacy, and measurement through engaging lessons like “Patterns and Tessellations” and “Designing Our Space.” Through hands-on projects and real-world challenges, learners strengthen their number sense and creative thinking.
3. Historical Tapestries – Learners journey through time as they explore ancient civilizations, world-changing inventions, and influential movements. From Confucius to the Industrial Revolution, children discover how ideas and innovations shape societies. With lessons like “Mapping Ancient China” and “Modern Explorers and Frontiers,” they build historical perspective and appreciation for human ingenuity.

One of the highlights of Unit 2 is its emphasis on interdisciplinary discovery – blending math, science, history, and the arts through the universal language of patterns. This approach helps children see the world as an interconnected system, sparking insights and curiosity that extend far beyond the page.
