Homeschooling: Life-Lived Learning

Finding the Right Curriculum
Often, when we start out homeschooling all we can think about is curriculum.
Navigating the Method Maze
What method will I do? What books will I buy? Am I going to commit to strictly Charlotte Mason or will I be a Waldorf mommy? Maybe I’ll do that unschooling thing…
The Essence of Homeschooling
In all the frazzle of choosing to homeschool and landing on a style, we miss the beauty of what it means to be a homeschooler. The simple fact that homeschool is about a life lived learning. It isn’t school at home.
Beyond Lesson Plans and Grades
Really, homeschool is probably a silly name for it all, when you think of it. Homeschool is about so much more than lesson plans and grades, it goes beyond keeping up with the education system and expands into lessons learned organically, in the rhythms of daily life.
Life Lived Learning
It’s about slowing down to do life with your children, to engage with them in play and to include them in everyday activities. Building “lessons” into how you measure the flour and wonder as you pour it through the sifter. Establishing a firm foundation with your children of life skills not taught in the classroom but caught in the routine of the days.
Education Unboxed
When we step away from the notion that education is organized and linear, we allow ourselves to wonder at the magnitude of beauty and inspiration in the world. This is when we realize that learning happens in ordinary moments. That creation sings of artistic design begging to be taken in with awe-struck eyes.
Kitchen Counter Lessons
I can’t tell you how many lessons have been taught at the kitchen counter.
Growing Up Together
When the children were smaller the lessons were simpler, “what colour is the apple?” or, “can you tell me what banana starts with, b, b, banana?”. Simple activities to occupy the tiny fingers reaching into the butter or drawing in the spilled sugar.
Life Skills and Confidence
As they grow up the lessons change, we start talking about knife safety, how to operate the stove, fractions and measurements, why it’s important not to mix up sugar and salt. Lessons that build confidence and life skills, lessons my children will need when they spread their wings and start out on their own.
The Beauty of Learning Together
Homeschooling is the beauty of learning together through lived experiences and diving into the chasm of history, science, literature, and poetry, simply because a Monarch butterfly fluttered past and reminded you of the old idea: a single wingbeat in California could stir a monsoon across the sea in Japan.
